Markets are reacting, fast. But will it last?

President Trump says the US ceasefire with Iran is “over”.

And already, major assets are reacting fast:

POTUS's comments come after ships in the Strait of Hormuz were attacked, which then triggered US strikes against Iran. Neighbouring Bahrain and Kuwait also intercepted attacks today.

Markets had been lulled into this sense of complacency, thinking that the ceasefire would be a durable off-ramp for these geopolitical tensions.

, which tracks the Dow Jones Industrial Average, hit a new intraday record high just yesterday (Tue, July 7), before now tumbling over 1% at the time of writing.

This latest escalation is a stern reminder to markets that geopolitical risks remain on the table, even as the Fed’s policy outlook remains “the” dominant theme for markets for the 2nd half of 2026.

Should oil rebound back meaningfully higher, that could re-awaken inflation fears, which should ramp up market bets for Fed rate hikes this year.

And major financial assets, including currencies, stocks, even cryptos, may revert to their sensitivity to oil prices once more (see "Potential Scenarios" below).

Still, beyond this latest flare-up and the market’s knee-jerk reactions today, it remains unlikely at this juncture that the Middle East will witness an all-out, re-escalation in the military conflict.

President Trump may not be inclined to ramp up the US military campaign against Iran at risk of prolonging the war closer to the US midterm elections. 

Also, markets note that POTUS has often shown a tendency to issue threats, with little follow through.

But none of this means that markets can stay complacent.

, as we previewed the incoming US jobs report a.k.a. nonfarm payrolls (NFP), here’s what we wrote:

 (drastically lower than 113k) that dilutes bets for Fed rate hikes in 2026 could translate into a weaker dollar, likely

Indeed, the US jobs market experienced a sharp slowdown, 

adding “just” 57,000 new jobs in June,

Although June’s unemployment rate fell to 4.2%, the participation rate* also fell to 61.5% - its lowest reading in over 5 years!

In response, markets lowered bets for Fed rate hikes this year:

NOTE: Gold prices tend to rise when investors expect US interest rates to remain unchanged or fall; gold tends to fall when rate hike expectations rise.

Gold duly soared on the news, rising as much as 1.9% in the 6 hours after the NFP’s release - greater than the 

 - touching its lowest levels since November 2025 - before rebounding!

To be clear, a single NFP release does not make a trend.

Hence, traders and investors around the world must 

continue monitoring the jobs and inflation data

 over the coming months to inform their Fed policy outlook.

Further signs of subsiding inflationary pressures should extend the runway for gold’s rebound, also noting 

 when he noted that “inflation risks have come down”.

Bloomberg’s model forecasts a 74% chance that gold will trade between $4057.70 - $4317.10 between now and next Friday, July 10th.

To be clear, despite the post-NFP rebound, spot gold remains well within its 

 (series of lower highs and lower lows) that has been in place since late-January.

Bullion bulls (those hoping prices will go higher) must conquer multiple

This notion of fundamentals overcoming technicals is illustrated by gold’s 2.3% advance since it
