The proposal suggests replacing Ethereum’s current execution layer (EVM) with RISC-V, aiming to improve scalability, simplify the execution layer, and boost efficiency. This change would allow smart contracts to remain compatible with existing Ethereum infrastructure while providing significant optimizations for the execution of smart contracts, especially in relation to zk-EVM proving. RISC-V-based smart contracts could bring efficiency gains of up to 100x in certain cases, particularly by optimizing time-consuming processes like state computation and block execution. Two potential implementation paths are proposed: maintaining dual VMs (EVM and RISC-V) or transitioning to a RISC-V interpreter for EVM contracts. This change could simplify the execution layer and enhance the long-term scalability of Ethereum.
